Not getting the login prompt.

Greetings All,

On one of the Ultra 10 machine,when boot the system in
single user mode,after supplying the password its
giving a messages "su:unknown user-id" and the system
is entering into the multi user mode.And in run level
3 i am not getting the login prompt.It's giving the
message that " <missing or bad passwd entry for
<root>".

I am not able to telnet or rlogin to this machine.

How i will get the login prompt?.

Please advice .
