sunrays, sun mozilla 1.4, default profiles in kiosk mode

up against the wall and frustrated. :-)

ok, so mozilla-1.4 downloaded from sun installs and runs easily and
nicely. got it on an e450 with solaris 8 and SunRay Server Software 1.3.
if I create a profile on my own sunray and work with it, it works.

problem -- everytime a kiosk session logs out and gets a new session,
mozilla comes back up with the profile manager and can't find the
profiles and has to create a new profile.

the binary appreg file in ~/.mozilla is what points to the profile. I
have tried editing it with bvi, but can't make it reference "~/.mozilla"
rather than a specific absolute path to a specific user home directory.

I created a "Default User" profile on my own sunray, and copied it to
the /opt/SUNWut/kiosk/prototypes/netscape/.mozilla directory. this is
replicated to the particular, e.g.,
/var/opt/SUNWbb/root/home/utcu15/.mozilla when that sunray starts a new
session. however, appreg points mozilla to, e.g. utcu9 if that is where
I created the profile originally.

I need to be able to make appreg use a relative reference like
"~/.mozilla" rather than an absolute reference. however, it doesn't
recognize that or I haven't edited it correctly with bvi. I'm assuming
there is an issue with shell vs. application resolution of that path
(e.g. the "~" works when the shell processes it, but not when an
application reads it and tries to open it).

Does anyone know how to edit appreg properly?

Or, alternatively, is there any way of having a symbolic link that is
relative? in other words, could I point appreg at
/var/opt/SUNWbb/root/home/profile and have profile be a symbolic link to
"~/.mozilla/profile" so that it would work with any user? I've played
with that and haven't been able to do it.

Or does anyone have any other tricks for rolling out mozilla for many
users without requiring that they each configure their own profile?
essentially, every time a kiosk mode sunray logs out and starts a new
session it is a new instance of a user and requires the profile to be
configured.

I've asked on a sunray list and I've searched mozilla and I've searched
everywhere. All I can find is complaints about this issue. no
resolution. I understand that the same issue applies to FireFox.

TIA
