long user names

We need to move to usernames longer than 8 characters. We authenticate
to LDAP and I've done preliminary tests that show this part will work.
Our imap/pop clients are okay, and so is ssh.

I've found a few utilities that won't accept > 8 chars. So far "ps"
won't work for looking up individual user, but it can be used by giving
numerical uid. "last" won't work but we use a homegrown replacement
that shows the entire remote host string, so making it >8char-aware is
no problem. "lsof" barfs, but we can mod that, too.

Are there any real deal-breakers? Has anyone done this in Solaris?

Thanks

D. Crocker
