Thanks for your response, The cable was the culprit(though it was a
brand new), I could get to the console with a new cable.

So the machine still spins its disks up an works on them for some time?
Then it probably boots into single user mode and waits for someone
figure out what is wrong and fix it using the serial console.

Most likely a problem with the cable. Have you tested it with another
sun? In any case, the cable should be a "DB25 to DB9 Null Modem Cable".
