lpadmin: ERROR: Error writing printer information

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am decommissioning a Solaris 5.6 server used as the print server
and setting up a V210 with Solaris 8 to be the new print server.
I got the HP JetDirect version E.10.34 (5.6 had E10.05) and installed
one printer (HP4000) using net_ljx000 as a test. Everything looked
good until I tried to make banner pages optional. The recommended
command:

lpadmin -p printername -o nobanner

gave the following message:

UX:lpadmin: ERROR: Error writing printer information for "printername"
                   (Invalid argument).

The configuration file (/etc/lp/interfaces/printername/configuration)
seems to be changed, I get Banner: optional. However, using lpr with
the -h option to not output a banner page doesn't work, the banner
page is printed. That works just fine on the old 5.6 print server.

I have searched Sunsolve and Google (web and groups) and none of the
instances of that error message seem to apply to my situation.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, summary will follow.
