Exclude file with tar

Hi gurus,

This is prob gonna be an easy one for most of you, but after googling and searching the archives I still can't get this to work !!
 
I want tar to read a file (exclude file) to exclude tar'ing 2 directories !! I want to tar everything else except these 2 directories ... I have tried the following commands -
 
tar cvf shang_live.tar -X exclude_logs live
tar cvfX shang_live.tar exclude_logs live

These are 2 examples I found on the net, but neither work. Inside my file exclude_logs I have the full path names of the files I don't want backed up.
 
I am using tar from sunfreeware ...
 
What am I doing wrong ??
