I have just patched ( with Recommended & Security patches downloaded 2 days ago from Sun
website ) an Ultra5 , running Solaris 9.
Now when I reboot the machine it gives the following message :
Hostname: palmate
The / file system (/dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0) is being checked.
Can't roll the log for /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0.
/dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0: CAN'T CHECK FILE SYSTEM.
/dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
WARNING - Unable to repair the / filesystem. Run fsck
manually (fsck -F ufs /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0). Exit the shell when
done to continue the boot process.
Then when I try an fsck , I get the following :
# fsck /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0
** /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0
Can't roll the log for /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0.

CONTINUE?
y
THE FOLLOWING SECTORS COULD NOT BE READ: 0 0 0 0
However , if I now do ctrl-d , then the root file-system DOES get mounted ,but the
following message kept scrolling
WARNING: add_spec: No major number for mpt
WARNING: add_spec: No major number for mpt
WARNING: add_spec: No major number for mpt
Then it proceeds on thus , apparently O.K :
The system is coming up. Please wait.
NIS+ domain name is foe.co.uk
I removed the 'logging' entry from vfstab , but I still getthis message at a reboot. I have
also done a 'boot -r' , I no longer see the message :
WARNING: add_spec: No major number for mpt
But I am STILL getting forced into single-user mode , and getting the logging message.
Any ideas , please ?
I will summarise
