How to shrink a data element for directory size?

All,

I am looking to find out how to "defrag" the data element for a
directory size.
This directory had alot of data being written and deleted over time so
the data element grew saying the directory size "ls -lad directory" was
10MB. For performance reasons we have broken out the dynamic content
being written to this directory into multiple sub directories so that
the data element wasn't 10MB therefore reduced directory listings, etc.
Without stopping our application, copying the directory to a new
directoryname and then renaming the new directory to replace the old one
(Down Time) is there a way that I can shrink this data element to show
the correct size?

Thanks

Chris
