Thank you all for your thoughts and ideas.
I asked

Installing MIME-Base64-2.20 on solaris 9

attempted install was as follows....

# perl Makefile.PL
Writing Makefile for MIME::Base64
# make
cc -c -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -xO3 -xdepend -
DVERSION=\
20\" -DXS_VERSION=\"2.20\" -KPIC -I/usr/perl5/5.6.1/lib/sun4-solaris-
64int/CO
Base64.c
cc: unrecognized option `-KPIC'
cc: language depend not recognized
cc: Base64.c: linker input file unused because linking not done
Running Mkbootstrap for MIME::Base64 ()
chmod 644 Base64.bs
rm -f blib/arch/auto/MIME/Base64/Base64.so
LD_RUN_PATH="" cc -G Base64.o -o blib/arch/auto/MIME/Base64/Base64.so
cc: Base64.o: No such file or directory
cc: no input files
make: *** [blib/arch/auto/MIME/Base64/Base64.so] Error 1

Working on this with another co-worker and he has read that others have had
this issue. We had 1 of three options. The easiest option was to install
perl from sunfreeware and we done that but cant get the new version to be
used.

install of perl-5.8.3-sol9-sparc-local went smooth. When we do perl -v we
see this

This is perl, v5.6.1 built for sun4-solaris-64int

When I upgraded perl on my FreeBSD machine I used somthing like
perl.use port

and that made the new version the current working version.

and found that I Had to install newer verstion of perl. After install needed
to symlink /usr/bin to /usr/local/bin and
cp /usr/local/bin/perl.5.8.x /usr/bin/perl

fixed
