syslogd: /dev/sysmsg: I/O error

I get this message on occasion in /var/adm/messages:

Jun 2 13:07:41 courses syslogd: /dev/sysmsg: I/O error

There doesn't seem to be any correlation with any other process or amount
of system usage as it happens at random times. Has anyone come across this
before?

A possible related problem is that when I try to log in via the "command
line login" from dtlogin, I just get a white screen. I had to log in via
ssh and stop and restart dtlogin. This error message came up a few days
later though.

Regards,

Dave
