Thanks to all of you who responded so swiftly to my plea for
help and for Gigabit ethernet 2.0/3.0 drivers (and patches).

I have had partial success with them. I had two systems with
Gbit enet problems. One is up and happily using its GBE to
do high-speed network backups now. The other one continues
to vex us here. I've tried swapping the networks, but the
original broken machine still remains broken with respect to
that network.

The Sbus GBE was replaced a couple of nights ago, but to no
avail. Anyway, I'm still investigating (and am looking for
any clever diagnostic tricks I can find in the meantime).

who sent me info, drivers, patches, and moral support! :-)
