Telnet daemon locks up on E5000/S2.6 system

I have some very odd behavior going on with an E5000 system here.
We've been having network-related problems off and on now for
a bit with it, and somewhere along the lines, it has gotten itself
into a state where the telnet port allows connections (or seems to)
but I only get the characters I type echoed back to me, and no
login prompt. Telnet (from another Sun) says it made the connection
but then nothing else appears unless I type character, which are
simply echoed back at me.

I can't just reboot this system right now. Other things seem
to be working OK (I can ssh to the machine, for example, and
other net ports appear OK). I need a way to debug and fix the
telnet port/service on this thing live.

Any ideas?

Tnx,
KR
