Hi all,

A customer is reporting strange behavior with on of their sun boxes running
a Progress databases. This can't be Progress related as it's only rectified
by cold booting.

Has anyone seen similar to the email sent below.

mtia,
Stuart.

We are experiencing a recurring problem with our server (which runs IBS)
approx every 2/3
months and would appreciate any advice that you could offer.

Details:

Each night the server is rebooted and a backup script run via root crontab
which uses ufsdump to back up the disks to tape.
This dump normally takes approx 3 hours (20:00 to 23:00).

However every 2/3 months this dump suddenly does not complete until 02:30.
The server then runs like a dog for the remainder of the day. If left
untouched, the dump will again not complete until 02:30

The only way we have found to reduce the dump time is then to do a cold
reboot.
Occasionally the server then subsequently crashes (couple of hours later) -
can ping but not telnet to it, server screen appears dead and unable to move
cursor.
Another cold reboot is done and then all is ok!

This is happened twice this year so far - last week (19/05) and 12/02. Both
times required the second cold reboot!!

Server Details:

Disk Storage: 2 x 4.2Gb + 4 x 9.0Gb & 2 x 18.0Gb
