Solaris specific perl question

First, please forgive the slightly off topic post, but after searching the web
extensively and visiting some of the perl sites I have found not definitive
answer.

In perl, you can change $0 so that 'ps' will reflect an other than default
program name. I would like to use this to differentiate the child processes a
program starts. It seems that Solaris (at least 8) will not work this way.
Changing $0 in the program has no effect on the output of 'ps -ef'

Does anyone know of a way in perl to effect what is displayed by 'ps -ef'? If
not, can anyone recommend another way to differentiate these processes in the
ps list?

TIA,

Chad
