ce instance number change fails on V440

1) I want to renumber the "ce" instances by hand-editing the path_to_inst, but
Sun TS strongly disagrees. Has anyone edited path_to_inst by hand ? Has it
caused any problems ?

2) Sun's recommended procedure for rebuilding path_to_inst (rm path_to_inst,
boot -ar) fails on the V440 with:
 a) boot -ar
 b) VxVM starting in boot mode...
    vxvm:vxconfigd: ERROR: disk /dev/rdsk/c5t0d0s2 can't be
claimed - ERROR: No such device or address
 c) The / file system (/dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0) is being checked.
    Can't open /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0
 d) Enters single-user "ro" mode
Could be due to boot disk mirroring with V440 on-board Hardware Raid.
Recommend disabling the HW Raid (raidctl -d) before performing an "ask-me"
boot.
