Network interface failover without mpathd

Our comms provider is giving us two ethernet (RJ45) connections for each
device. Most of our Sun systems are running Solaris 8 and have at least two
ethernet interfaces. I would like to provide Active/Passive redundancy. My
problem is that I don't have large enough IP address spaces to allocate
three IP addresses to each machine, so I can't use Suns multipathing
software.

Does anyone know of an alternate solution that allows the interfaces to swap
automatically if the active link goes down, while only requiring a single IP
address?

I have thought about a simple shell script, but things start to get
complicated when I consider changing routing tables etc.
