still need logdaemon?

I've searched the Sun Mangers archives for this and spent considerable time
on Google looking for an answer but haven't been successful although it
seems like I should be finding the answer. I'm sure you all can help me.

I'm in the process of configuring a new Sun Fire v240 server running
Solaris 9. This server will serve as an NFS server and NIS server (as well
as other services) for our small Unix infrastructure. It will be
replacing an Ultra 5 running Solaris 2.6 serving the same purposes. On the
Ultra 5 I was using the login binary from logdaemon to restrict who had
access to the machine via the /etc/login.access file. Since I'll be using
NIS maps I want to restrict NIS logon on this server to myself and a couple
of other users who help with system admin. in my absence. I want them to
use ssh but just in case I still want to have telnet blocked to restrict
access. My question is do I still need logdaemon to do this or has the
Solaris OE progressed enough that there is now some kind of built in
ability to do what logdaemon used to do.

On a side note I'm curious about opinions on moving to LDAP. Part of my
background research before starting the server indicated that Sun is
phasing out NIS+ as of Solaris 10 but that they hadn't made a clear cut
decision on NIS yet. I'm sticking with it for now so that I can get the
server up a bit more quickly. The guides I've seen on setting up LDAP seem
quite involved and frankly it's probably overkill for my particular
situation (really need to share password file only and I have less than 10
systems). I also have a few clients that are Solaris 2.6 that I'd rather
not have to update in a hurry to make them work with LDAP. I'll gladly
listen if anyone wants to make comments regarding a move from NIS to LDAP.

TIA for any help,
Lisa
