Thank you everyone. I am really happy that I had so many reponses for my question (97% /var full).
                   The real problem was some one was deleting the open files like mail,log,etc files .Hence du -k and df -k were different.I rebooted the machine and /var was 5% full.
                 However some of the members reported this is a basic question and does not belong to this group.From next time I will check some other groups before mailing this group.Sorry.
