Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to reply, there are too many to thank individually. This mail list is fantastic !!!!
The problem in the end was that everything wasn't talking to each other in the same language.
Firstly, the NIC's on the servers were at same speed (100Mbps Full-Duplex) but one had Auto-Negotiation ON and one had it OFF. So I changed that, and the backups were no faster !!
But the problem was fixed when I set the port on the switch connecting the 2 NIC's to exactly the same !!!! Voila ..... Fast remote backups.
Before I made the port on the switch and the NIC's the same I was backing up at 110mb/hour ..... Then after I configured everything to be the same, I backed up 12gb in 48 mins :)
