Cat /dev/null and ls

We have a Sun V1280, running Solaris 8, patched to 108528-23, Veritas VM
3.5.
I was called today to look at a huge log file of approx. 134GB size, or
so ls -la reported.
The application person did 'cat /dev/null > applogfile'. When the
command was finished,
'ls -la applogfile' showed the file size exactly the same, but 'df -k .'
showed the filesystem
being approx. 16GB less than before. If I do 'du -k applogfile', it
reports it as approx. 200MB filesize.
The app is still running and logging to this file. Has anyone else seen
this bizarre behavior in ls ?

Thanks !
