Tar extraction Error

Hi

Tape Extraction errors on sun.

User had tar'd a 4GB of data file onto a 8mm tape.

But while extracting i get "checksum" and I/O errors.
but extracts only 2GB of file

i am using "tar xvf <device file>" in to current
directory.

please suggest
