Redirect the standard error, not standard output.

   rcp -r $SENDDIR user@machine:dir 2>
${logdir}/log.tmp

Would be the Borne and Korn shell way to do it. In
[t]csh,

   rcp -r $SENDDIR user@machine:dir >&
${logdir}/log.tmp
