Ultra 5s crashes with "Fast Data Access MMU" error & hostid practice by Sun

Hi,

We have a batch of Ultra 5s (& a couple of Netra - the slim 1u type)
that crashes to OBP 'ok' prompt. On some occasions they became
totally unbootable & need the CPU board to be swapped & on one
occasion when it crashed to 'ok' prompt, I issued 'sync' to make it
create a crash dump but nothing was created under
       /var/crashfiles/hostname directory.
All the boxes run Solaris 7 (can't remember the release date).
In all cases, we've seen the crashes to 'ok' prompt showing
"Fast Data Access MMU" error (but I forgot to note down the code).

I've also noticed that in the past when we tried to boot up from CDs on
the Ultra5s, they were not able to read the CDROM intermittently & if
we're lucky, it reads & boots up from the CDROM. If we're not lucky,
it either gave "disk read" error or "Fast Data Access MMU" error.

One of the sun specialist argued with me that it's a media fault but the
same Solaris 7 media never have any problem with our Ultra 10s or
E220.

2nd question :
Since we're replacing so many CPU boards over the last 3 months, it
strikes me that we need to ensure the hostid is preserved after CPU
board replacement. I log a call with Sun & the Sun specialist said he
is not sure if it's a practice for them to ensure the hostid stays the same
after CPU board replacement (by transferring the NVRAM over) - he
checked with a Sun Microsystem's field engr & that engr too said they
may not always do that unless the specific Sun engineer is experienced
enough to do it.

Does Sun in the US or your respective countries do this (ie ensure the
hostid stays the same) as a practice? Some of my colleagues who
administer Sun boxes may not be aware that their Raptor firewall
licence will expire within 30 days (& cause service disruption) if the
hostid gets changed after CPU board replacement.

Thanks for any inputs,
Goh
