Thanks to all who responded:

Darren Dunham
Mike
Deborah Santumauro

It seems that my soft partitions were created on the wrong disk slice
(s2) and consequently sharing space with swap, thus causing the
superblock corruption.

I have since created a new slice and moved the offending soft partition
onto it.

Thanks again to everyone for their patience (esp Darren)).
