Sun Cluster 3.1 public network IP connectivity

Hi all

I am using a sun cluster 3.1. Each node taking part of the cluster has
two physical NICs. I am going to configure IP mutipathing on each cluster
node. As far as I understand, on each node of the cluster the IP
configuration would be:

-One of the interfaces is active and therefore handling the traffic

-The another interface (within the same cluster node) is standby and
only handles traffic when the first NIC fails.

-Both NICs have the same IP address configured on it.

-Each NIC has its own test IP address. Additionally, per each
multipathing group (one per cluster node) another test IP address is
configured. I suppose that these IP addresses are used to check that
the cluster node can go on handling traffic (using any of both NICs),
and by this test IP address (the one associated to the mutipathing
group) the cluster detects that both NIC of the cluster node have
failed and therefore the other cluster node takes over , using its
active NIC to handle the traffic from now on.

Meanwhile the other cluster node has similar IP configuration, but both
NICs would be standby (in normal operation). Then when the first cluster
node fails (both NICs had failed) the traffic starts being handled by the
new active NIC in the new actice cluster node.

Is this approach correct?

If it is correct, must I define a virtual IP to address the whole cluster
from outside? (This VIP would be attached to the active cluster node) or
can I configure the same IP on the four NICs and then address the cluster
from outside using this IP?

Please let me know if the question needs further explanation.

Thank you very much for your help,

Best Regards,

/Mario
