sender address for mailer-daemon

Folks,
I have a machine running Solaris 2.5 (sorry, no chance of
updating it) with the standard patched to latest sendmail (sendmail
8.6 from what I can see). I am having a problem with the #error
mailer where the from address that is use is "Mailer-Daemon@machine",
I don't seem to be able to change this from address no matter what I
do (changed $j, $m even hacked rule set 3 to change the "magic" token)
but nothing seems to change the #error from address. This is a
definite pain because my internet relay machine is now rejecting the
"mailer-daemon@machine" from address as invalid. Anyone any clues on
how to fix this? (apart from updating sendmail.... I am leaving that
for absolute last ditch)
