Backing up NIS+

Dear SunManagers

Currently we are running NIS+ on a domain with a single root master , this machine is
a Blade 100 , running Solaris 8.

Each night a cumulative incremental backup of the server is taken using Veritas Datacenter
to SDLT tape. At the weekends tow full backups are made of the server.

I am wondering whether , in the event of catastrophic hardware failure of teh NIS+ root
master server , whether the backups made as above would give us a trustworthy
recovery method ? Note that we do have a machine configured as a NIS+ root master
replica. I must admit that in my experience , when the NIS+ root master server has been
down , the NIS+ replica has not been of much use. In fact I have found that , in the past
when the root master replica has been down ( while the root master server is up ) it
has caused widespread NIS+ problems.

I would be interested to hear comments from those with experience of NIS+ . By the way ,
we are looking to migrate awy from NIS+ to LDAP in about 12 months time.

Thanks in advance

Dominic Clarke
