v440 hanging up intermittently

Hi All,

I have a server that is exhibiting strange tendencies :)
It is a V440 with 8GB Memory and 4 x 1062Mhz CPU's and fibre attached
internal disks.
This system is running Oracle 8.0.5.2.1 Database and Oracle Apps 11.0.3.

It runs fine for a while and suddenly hangs up. What happens is that the
users can no longer get into Oracle Apps, all they see is the hourglass
after trying to login.
If I telnet to the machine when this is happening I can login, but if I run
svrmgrl or do an ls -al /apps (which is on internal disk) it just never
displays anything or returns. If I try an init 6 or init 0 it also doesn't
respond.
All recommended patches from Sun have been applied.

I don't believe this is an oracle issue as this happened the first time when
the server was being setup with SDS mirroring.

One it is rebooted it works fine for a day or so then it happens again.

Any and all idea's would be appreciated.

Regards,
Alan.

Subject: SUMMARY: Performance issues with SunFire V480Rs in a veritas
cluster

A bit of background on this problem. We've got two sparc Solaris 9
Sunfire V480Rs
in a Veritas cluster with the cluster managed by VCS. The cluster offers
nfs services
to a large number of workstations. When i benchmarked the i/o speeds to
the cluster,
i found that the read bandwidth was high, while the write bandwidth was
atrocious.

Turns out the problem was a veritas limitation caused by the number of
nfsd processes
that VCS launches. VCS starts only 16 nfsd processes, irrelevant of the
value of
NFSD_SERVERS in /etc/default/nfs.

Took us awhile to find that one.
