Solaris server+client and Sun Java Desktop System

Hello list,

I have worked on and with Sparc/SunOS/Solaris since SS1 1989, mostly as
a CAD user and the belonging Solaris/CDE setup and sysadmins.

My case and problem:
My legacy system is an Axil (sun4m) ws/wg-server and a SS1 diskless
client (sun4c) working as X terminal.

I am just upgrading from Solaris 2.5 to Solaris 7, after a test of both
8 and 9. Solaris 7 in first relase still has sun4c support and the GUI
tool Adminsuite 2.3/Solstice HostManager for easy client installation).
(Others prefer even Solaris 2.6 as the best suited version for older and
less powerful sparc hardware like mine).

To distribute the load and offload my somewhat tired Axil/Solaris/CDE
workgroup server, I plan to replace CDE by introducing Sun Java Destop
System (SJDS/x86) as a Login&Session server. That way I hope to speed up
my main Cad applicatin running on Axil as a dedicated application
server/execution host.

That is, the CAD users on SS1 and Axil should get remote login to SJDS
(based on SuSE Linux/Gnome2/GDM, a nice and promising desktop in my
opinion), transparently run the CAD X-application on Axil and save their
user data files on SJDS.

General docs:
This principle is illustrated in the online CDE guides on Sun Docs:
http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/802-5818/6i9i51als?q=session+host &a=view
http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/802-5818/6i9i51am0?q=session+host &a=view

The spesific SJDS/GDM configuration docs is here:
http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/817-3909/6mjfjjvs3?a=view
http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/817-3909/6mjfjjvsd?a=view

Questions:
This client/server network configuration looks somewhat complex (at
least for me), but should yet be actual and of interest for many cases,
not least to further extend the life and useability of good old hardware
and software.

I expect the configuration/setup involves user authention (I use files,
not NIS), X/XDMCP/KDM and NFS, maybe a startup script for the remote Cad
application (running in an xterm) and more?

Further I expect that the Axil application server still has to run its
local Xsun server (like the SS1 client) as X terminal to display remote
login from SJDS/Gnome session server, and for local use of the Cad X apps.

But can I disable the "whole CDE" (/usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -d) on Axil
regarding the necessary X communication between the X client Cad
application and the remote SJDS/Gnome session server? What is needed
here, XDMCP or?

I wish suggestions and hands-on to discuss which files and howto setup
this configuration?

TIA/Terje
