Thanks for your many replies.
I believe I have zeroed in on the exact problem, and
the answer will have to come from our tape drive mfg.
This error occurs only when creating a cpio tape with
4/8GB drives on a Solaris8 system using the cpio "B"
option.
When we do that the tape can only be read back with a
unit running Solaris and with the same size drive.
The cpio works between Solaris and Red Hat Linux in
every other case. I will be in touch with the
manufacturer today.
