runaway processes

Recently had server with multiple runaway processes.
"ps -ef" reported multiple processes mostly associated with cron jobs and
in.rshd.
I don't have a snapshot of the ps available, but the crons and associated
backup scripts spawned by them had well over 300 minutes. The in.rshd also
averaged 50 minutes.
The worst part was that they all reported the number "3" under the column
labeled "C", and were impossible to kill. Eventually had to reboot box.

Did I have any other options to get rid of these processes?... I didn't do
prstat but I am guessing these processes were sleeping (read something about
not be allowed to kill sleeping processes).
