U60 stops talking, SOLVED sort of

Thanks to many for thoughtful replies about my U-60 that would just stop
communicating until rebooted and eventually would not give a dt login at
the console.

I have bypassed my Linksys NAT device, which I use as a ping-swallower and
port-screener, and plugged the machine directly into the building backbone
after disabling much of inetd.conf and unneeded rpc daemons. The machine
now behaves perfectly.

I wonder if the error traffic between thelmalou and DNS (which was
wondering why thelmalou was talking on helen's IP which was actually
helen's NAT's IP) had something to do with it. Also, helen kept asking who
this thelmalou was on her side of the NAT even though thelmalou was listed
in helen's /etc/hosts with a 192.168 IP. I do not understand broadcasts.

Finally, in way of holiday greetings, I venture that many of you
sunmanagers get about as much respect as us managers of nuclear magnetic
resonance facilities. We have to be experts at chemistry, nuclear magnetic
resonance, radio frequency electronics, and system and network
administration. Yet, a common attitude I get from faculty members is, "If
you can do it, it mustn't be that hard." One department chairman even
suggested that I could be replaced by a secretary, albeit a "really savvy" one.

So, for all you do, this Bud's for you. I know how challenging your jobs
are. Happy Holidays.
Bill
