Sharing tape drive for clustered servers

What I am tring to accomplish:
I am trying to share a SDLT 320 between 2 E4500's (serverA and serverB).
These servers use veritas cluster management. We do incremental (level 1)
dumps Tues-Friday appending to the same tape. If the cluster should move
from 1 server to the other, I want to continue writing to same tape as
seemlessly as possible. I have scripted the dumps to handle the switch and
position the tape (rew, eom) if necessary. On serverB, I have modified the
nvramrc for the local scsi initiator and rebooted.
The document said nothing about rebooting serverA.

Some problems:
"mt stat" on serverB returns incomplete vendor:
        Vendor 'SL30 ' Product '22..G.......' tape drive:
Seeing this does not give me a warm fuzzy that I have successfully modified
the scsi initator.
??? How can I tell if I have successfully modified the scsi initiator ???

When I attempt to "mt rew; mt eom" on serverB, this also fails.
??? Do I have to share the /etc/dumpdates between servers ???

One more reason I think its wrong: ServerA creates ufsdumps but ServerB
won't read:
when I do a ufsrestore verbose, I get: "Volume is not in dump
format".
