Curious issue with Netra X1

Hi;

I have an old Netra X1 that I'm going to turn into a monitoring server -
something like bb, but it's been throwing a really wierd error and I was
wondering if anyone has seen the following behaviour before:

First off, log in to /dev/console via serial A (LOM):

torouxms01 console login: drew
Password:
Last login: Sun Mar 12 17:10:27 from x.x.x.x

then:

drew@torouxms01$ su -
Password:
su: Unknown id: root

Yes, the root account is there and it's fine, but I can't access it. I checked
all the permissions on su, etc., and they're fine.

The killer: If I log off as myself I can log in as root.

drew@torouxms01$ exit
logout

torouxms01 console login: root
Password:
Last login: Thu Nov 21 17:14:14 on console
Dec 2 12:01:48 torouxms01 login: ROOT LOGIN /dev/console
root@torouxms01# finger root
Login name: root In real life: Super-User
Directory: / Shell: /sbin/bash
On since Dec 2 12:01:48 on console
No unread mail
No Plan.
root@torouxms01#

Any ideas regarding this behaviour ? I think it might be a platform specific
bug.

Thanks,

Drew.
