E4500 with 4 x CPU, 2G Ram, Solaris 8 kjp 108528-22.
Using either the Solaris bundled sendmail, or sendmail 8.12.1, the initial
connection is very slow, and often there are 40 - 100 sendmail children
forked, this on a machine which is busy, but not madly so (uptime shows
typically load average: 0.18, 0.22, 0.22). Truss shows these processes are
invariably sleeping. The mailq does not seem untoward, and generally holds
queued mail for external reasons. There are no (helpfull to this) messages
in syslog.
All other processes (i.e. http, pop etc) running on the same machine seem
fine. DNS resolution also appears to be fine...
I would be most gratefull for any ideas...
Regards
john
