shutting down hme1?

we have an e450 running sol 8 with two nics, hme0 and hme1, viz:

bash-2.03$ netstat -i
Name Mtu Net/Dest Address Ipkts Ierrs Opkts Oerrs Collis Queue
lo0 8232 loopback localhost 7842 0 7842 0 0 0
hme0 1500 foo.bar.org foo.bar.org 166413 0 161091 0 0 0
hme1 1500 baz.bar.org baz.bar.org 34899 0 7 0 0 0

the system is running nis+ in nis compatibility mode. it also has two external scsi arrays mounted. it mounts a directory on another solaris 8 box, an e250, in the same subnet via nfs.

(the kicker) several workstations in the same subnet mount /usr/local, /var, and /opt, as well as a couple directories via nfs from the server.

rebooting this thing has traditionally been a bear, on account of the cross-mounts. i've found that the only way of assuring stability has been to login to each of the workstations and umount -a, and then shut the workstations down completely (ugh). then i comment-out the mounts in the server's /etc/vfstab, do umount -a there, and then (and only then) do the reboot. hassle? why, yes... but elsewise nis+ goes all wonky, users can't login, mayhem ensues, etc..

to make a long story longer, for sundry reasons we need to shut down hme1. but when i've tried (as an unfortunate test) simply disconnecting the cable to that nic, well, see aforementioned mayhem/wonkiness/etc.

what should one do, which files should one check, in order to 1) make sure no traffic continues to flow through hme1, and then 2) shut down the interface?

we intend on leaving the nic in the system, we just don't need it to be functional.

thx in advance.
