I posted last week about bizarre problems installing Solaris 8 (02/02) on an
Ultra 5. I wondered was there perhaps a hardware compatibility issue (though
I thought that was vanishingly unlikely). I was very pleased to see a
response from Casper, as that's usually an end to the search :-) but
unfortunately in this case he was just assuring me that there is no hardware
incompatibility.
So I really needed to get Solaris 8 installed on this box and I then tried
with a copy of 10/00 which I had lying around and lo and behold, that worked.
Frankly, I'd rather NOT have used the first shipping version of Solaris 8 but
it and the last version were all that I had and as 02/00 wouldn't (and still
won't) install I had no choice.
Even that install was not trouble free. I did a "whole enchilada" install
(well, except for OEM files) and yet there are no man pages, and some other
packages are also missing e.g. SUNWarc - go figure.
To go back to the attempt to install 10/02, when I boot from CD, and just let
the Openwin install as it normally does, I get this in the install console :
The system is coming up. Please wait.
in.rdisc: No interfaces up
Assertion failed: have_ext_net_info(nc) == TRUE, file main.c, line 931
Abort - core dumped
Starting remote procedure call (RPC) services: sysidns done.
Anyone able to shed any light on this ? Clearly one suggestion would be a hme0
hardware problem, but it works fine in 2.5.1 and in Sol. 8 (10/00).
