Login hang when using su or ssh

When using su to change from root to any user the
login hangs for about a minute, then proceeds to give
the motd. Also, when ssh to the server it accepts
login, displays the motd, says I have no mail, then
hangs for about a minute before giving me a prompt.

One thing I've noted: there are 2 NICs in the server
(v480), each on a separate network. If both NICs are
UP there is no delay. When one is down (ce0) the
delay persists, even though I'm accessing the server
using the 2nd NIC (ce1). If both NICs are UP there is
no delay.

Solaris 8, recommended patch cluster as of 10/03. Thanks..
