FC100/S and A5000 hung loop??

I recently was given an A5000 with 2 FC100/S cards. I have tried these
cards on an E5000, E3000 and Ultra2E (all sbus). However, whatever
I do and whatever configuration I use, I can never see the A5000!
In fact, going through the A5k troubleshooting, it mentions loop
debugging. So, I tried that - as soon as a card is connected via fiber
the loop count drops to 0 (on a full loop). I've disconnected the
front and back planes - still 0 count, but when I kill the gbics, then
I get a count again.

So far, i've tried this with both FC100/s cards, multiple gbics, and
even
a JNI FC64 card I happened to have (That one partially works. I get no
devices in /dev/es, but it recognizes 7 of the 14 disks!)

I'm running Sol8, fully patched up on all systems.

Help, please! this is driving me insane!!!
