Hi all,
Many Thanks for all your replies. They were most helpful.
The problem turned out to be a hardware issue. One of the Ultrasparc III
cpus in the server had a faulty FPU (Floating Point Unit). I installed the
Cpu Diagnostic Monitor provided by Sun which detected and disabled the
problem cpu.

Thanks also to Paul Richards who interestingly reported having the same
problem on an Ultrasparc II.
