DLT4500 tape library on SS20 running Sol9

I have a tape library (DLT 4500) on an SS20 with Solaris 9, and it is behaving
in a very strange way. I am posting here since people have in the past had
some discussion on using this quite old unit on Solaris and perhaps someone has
seen a similar situation...

Loading a tape from a slot to the drive using:

         mtx -f /dev/scsi/changer/c0t5d1 load 1 0

results in the tape actually being moved to the drive, and once the drive starts
to process the tape, the LCD on the tape library shows 'ERR CTL' for a moment
and then a loader reset occurs (LCD shows 'LDR RST') where it runs through all
the slots in the magazine, and then it either finally decides to be ok, or it
repeats this process a couple of times. A kernel warning is printed to the
console, complaining about a 'Disconnected command timeout on Target ...' and
mtx complains that its operation did not succeed. The drive does actually get
the tape ready usually, though.

Either way, has anyone seen something like this before? Any ideas what might
be causing it, or where else I can look for information (the drive manual is
no help at all)?

        Kris
