Fellows,

I got no answer to this problem. Thanks to Stephen Kives and Alan Bradley
for their suggestions.

Here is a summary of the problem:
        Several Sunfire 280Rs running Solaris 8 2/02 s28s_u7wos_08a SPARC.
        created /etc/auto.xa.
Could not automount. Reason: Permission denied.
change permissions to 644 for /etc/auto.xa, /etc/auto_home and
/etc/auto_master
        Automount works.
Rebooted system. System hangs and never returned after displaying
these messages:

                Configuring /dev and /devices.
Configuring the /dev directory (Compatible devices)
The System is coming up. Please wait.

Does not even reach single user when booted to singe user.
Booted to single user using CDROM and
Reverted to condition before changing the permissions system still
hangs.

Any ideas are still welcome.
Marcel

Subject: Automount

Hello,

I have several Sunfire 280Rs running Solaris 8 2/02 s28s_u7wos_08a SPARC. I
created /etc/auto.xa for automounting. I could not automount because of
permission problem. I change permissions to 644 for /etc/auto.xa,
/etc/auto_home and /etc/auto_master to get the automount to work. When the
machines were rebooted, they would not come up and the keyboard is locked.
The only thing working is "Stop-A". System stops after displaying the
following:

        Configuring /dev and /devices.
Configuring the /dev directory (Compatible devices)
The System is coming up. Please wait.

I have not been able to move beyond this point and four of my twelve systems
are down because of this problem. I have brought the system up to single
user booting from the CDROM and changing the permissions back to what they
were before but this did not help.

What could I have done wrong and how can I fix it before the rest of the
systems go down?
