Running multiple domains (postfix instances) on one IP-address

Dear managers,

We are trying to setup a small ISP server on a Solaris 8 machine that
is supposed to host 20-30 domains. We know how to configure apache to
run multiple domains on one IP-address. However, each domain should
have its own mail accounts as well. Currently we successfully run one
postfix instance that provides a mailbox for each system user.

Now we want to configure arbitrary - independent of the available
system accounts - mailboxes for each domain. I understand there are
basically two ways to run multiple postfix instances. One is to have
multiple IP-addresses on one network interface and assign a postfix
instance to each ip-address. This won't work for us since we have only
5 public ip-addresses. The other approach is to run all postfix
instances on one ip-address but on different ports. This raises a
question. How do the servers in the internet know, that mail for a
given domain is not to be delivered to port 25 but to a different port?
Can this be setup in the DNS configuration somehow?

We would greatly appreciate some insights on this issue. Sorry if this
question is a bit off topic.

Thanks a lot for any hints, URLs, book suggestions,...

Regards,

    Andreas
