Strategy to use free space on large (72g) boot disk

I am looking for information on the best strategy in using leftover space on a
72g hard drive (boot disk). I have multiple 420R's with (2) 72g drives.
After I slice up the boot disk, I plan to mirror it with the second drive.
These servers primary function is for sunrays. My slices are as follows:
    0 / 4g
    1 /var 4g
    3 swap 8g
    4 /usr 4g
    5 /opt 4g
    6 25m disksuite
    7 25m disksuite
    freespace 48g

We have been putting the remainder in either /var or /opt. I like the
idea of putting it as far into the disk as possible (/opt, or even slice 7).
So, my question is: is it better to just not use it or is there a good place
to put it?
Also, am I hurting myself with having such a large root partition?
