Hi all ,

I have a V880 running Solaris 9 with the latest recommended patches /including latest security patches .
#uname -a
#SunOS PIXIE 5.9 Generic_112233-08 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-880

I am not able to change any passwords on the system :

# passwd "username" gives Permission denied (both root and the user himself can't change the password)

console shows the foll message :
Sep 17 07:40:05 PIXIE passwd[8270]: passwdutil.so: can't get domain

I did a passwd -d "username" so that the user has to change his password during next login

When the user tries to login he is asked for new password and confirmation but is thrown out after this and the console displays

Sep 17 07:43:22 PIXIE login: change password failure: System error

The nsswitch.conf shows the foll entries related to passwd

# the following two lines obviate the "+" entry in /etc/passwd and /etc/group.
passwd: compat
group: files nis

I don't have nis running on the system . "ps -ef|grep yp" returns nothing ,there are no files in /var/yp . Seems to be something related to NIS but I can't figure out what it is

Any help wil be appreciated and of course I'll summarize
