[ UPDATE] "lost" default route

I had another Sun box lose its default route over the weekend - completely
separate network. I haven't seen this problem before, but it has now
happened to two unrelated boxes within one week.

Responses to original question below.

New information:

   Second server: SunOS SERVER2 5.8 Generic_108528-16 sun4u sparc
SUNW,UltraSPARC-IIi-cEngine.

First server was running in.routed, second was not.

default route is HSRP between two Cisco routers that haven't had a
service interruption

I will look into upgrading patch levels, but would like to know what I'm
fixing...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Six out of office notifications one anti-spam challenge, plus the
following.

Is "routed" running on this system?

---Rsk

-----

Routers will not show a route if it is not active/up. If you have lost
connectivity with your router, the route will be dropped from the routing
table. If its a static route then the sun box may not have any way of being
told that the route is back up again, like listening for RIP packets, and
so you saw the behavior that it would accept the route add without
complaint. That's my guess anyway. BTW, I am not suggesting you turn on
RIP, its a nightmare. I would look into the network traffic or check the
router.

I had this problem with an older version of Solaris 8 (can't remember
what the kernel patch was...). Applying a recent patch cluster solved
the problem.

SunOS NAME 5.8 Generic_108528-08 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraSPARC-IIi-cEngine

One of my Solaris 8 servers "lost" its default route today. netstat -nr
showed the following (Note lack of default route):

Routing Table: IPv4
Destination Gateway Flags Ref Use Interface
-------------------- -------------------- ----- ----- ------ ---------
10.11.0.0 10.8.5.1 UG 1 107960
10.8.0.0 10.8.0.8 U 11570432 hme0
10.9.0.0 10.8.5.3 UG 1 0
10.0.0.0 10.8.5.190 UG 11800657
224.0.0.0 10.8.0.8 U 1 0 hme0
127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 UH 4 8993 lo0

The /etc/defaultrouter file exists and is correct (plus, the server hasn't
been rebooted)

Low usage server, no one (really!) was logged in anywhere near the time
this occurred.

route add default put the route back without complaint.

Routing Table: IPv4
Destination Gateway Flags Ref Use Interface
-------------------- -------------------- ----- ----- ------ ---------
10.11.0.0 10.8.5.1 UG 1 107960
10.8.0.0 10.8.0.8 U 11570432 hme0
10.9.0.0 10.8.5.3 UG 1 0
10.0.0.0 10.8.5.190 UG 11800657
224.0.0.0 10.8.0.8 U 1 0 hme0
default 10.8.5.1 UG 1 729
127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 UH 4 8993 lo0

Any suggestions on why a box would lose its default route? I'm stumped,
which makes it very hard to say it won't happen again.

Thanks,
--Jim
