problem with some UIDs

Dear Managers
We have an intermittent problem on one of our 2.6 machines where random
users find that they cannot log in. When I reset the password they still
cannot log in. I am able to su to the user from a priviledged user but am
unable to login as that user.

The work around is to use usermod -u to change the uid of the user. They are
then able to log in, we seem to be getting around 3 a month of this and as
one of the users was an owner of a database, this caused us some grief.

Has anyone encountered this before and know a fix?

N.B. We have not patched this server for a while and it is stable in all
other respects.

Thanks in advance and I will summarise.

Regards
Roger
