Serial Number from OS

Good morning all,

I have what I think is an odd question.

Does anyone out there know of a way to obtain the system serial number from
within the OS?

This would be useful to me so that I may automate system test results storage.

I know that on some systems you can get the mainboard serial number from the
EEPROM, but is there any way to get the main system serial number out of the
OS.
