Need Help With Slow Writes To VxVM Raid-5 Volume

     Folks-

We have just installed Veritas Volume Manager on a new
Sun Fire 880 running Solaris 8 (2/02). We've put 4 36G
drives under VxVM control and set up several Raid-5
volumes using default parameters of the administrator's
GUI (VxVM logging is turned on). UFS is the file system
on all the partitions (it seems that we didn't buy the
VxFS license).

When we try to write to the VxVM Raid-5 volumes the
rate of writing to Raid-5 is about 1/8th the speed of
writing the same data to a UFS partition on one of the
non-Veritas-controlled disks. This speed differential
seems way too high. Can anyone suggest what we might do
to increase the rate of writing to the VxVM Raid-5
volumes? Does VxVM Raid-5 only work effectively
with 5 or more disks in the Raid?

    Thanks in advance.

    Mike
