I had asked if anyone had a Seagate Cheetah 10K.6 (ST3146807LC, 147
GByte) disk running successfully inside an Ultra 60 and/or Ultra 80
system running Solaris 8?
Detailed information about the ST3146807LC disk can be found here:
http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/marketing/detail/0,1081,530,00.html
Though noone had used this disk yet, everone agreed that it should
work. I will buy a disk and give it a try (found it for $617 ;-).
Concerns include performance and heat:
Performance
The internal SCSI bus in the U60/U80 supports 40 MByte/sec, the drive
supports up to 320 MByte/sec. Installing a SCSI controller PCI card
might be a good idea, if performance becomes an issue.
Heat
I checked the Sun System Handbook http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/
for internal 36.4 GByte 10000RPM Seagate disks supported in the U60,
and compared the specs with the ST3146807LC, 147 GByte disk:
peak operating current SE mode
5V 12V
ST336704LC (36.4 GByte 10000RPM) 0.84 - 1.2 1.12 - 2.64
ST336605LC (36.4 GByte 10000RPM) 0.73 - 1.17 0.82 - 2.35
ST336607LC (36.4 GByte 10000RPM) 0.83 - 1.78 0.68 - 2.21
ST3146807LC (147 GByte 10000RPM) 0.99 - 1.99 0.95 - 2.62
While the peak operating current in SE mode is a bit higher for the
ST3146807LC it seems still comparable enough to the 36.4 GByte drives
that I am not too concerned about cooling, especially in a datacenter
setup with a controlled (cool) environment.
Thank you all for your responses: Anthony A. D. Talltree, Paul
Ketelaar, Sven Heydecke.
Cheers

There's so much comedy on television.
Does that cause comedy in the streets?
